General

Introduction

Please read this manual carefully. Some of these points may be trivial to you, but some of these are crucial for the longevity and integrity of the drone. While built sturdy, incorrect handling can break sensitive parts easily.

Before Your First Flight

Flying an FPV drone is more difficult than it appear to be.

For this reason we highly recommand to start practising in a simulator. There are quite a few simulators for different devices.

This avoids crashes and costs in the early stages of flying a real drone.

Videos

The Forerunner automatically records videos and saves them to the storage card according to the settings you made in the goggles.

A copy of what was streamed to the goggles can be saved to another storage disk that is to be placed into the goggles, depending on the goggles you choose and your settings.

Please mind that there are limitations and recommendations to the cards as also varying quality when buying more storage cards. The cards included are of high quality.

The videos taken can be edited by a number of softwares to your liking, youtube is an excellent free source of tutorials for that matter.

Charging Battery Packs

Unlike consumer batteries, FPV drone batteries are a little more bare bones. This allows for more freedom and self management at the cost of some comfort.

Each FPV battery pack comes with different ratings: structure (4S, 6S, 8S, 4S2P…), voltage( determined by structure) and charging rate (displayed by ‘C’).

The voltage can be thought of as “electric pressure” akin to water pressure. Ignoring this factor will damage the batteries and can be very dangerous.

The structure determines 3 imporant voltage values: minimum safe voltage, maximum safe voltage and storage voltage.

The storage voltage is the voltage number you want to keep the battery at when you do not use it. It extends battery life and is considered safe practice.

A 6S battery has:

  • minimum voltage of 3.8V
  • storage voltage of 4.2V
  • maximum voltage of 4.5V
Battery Straps

The Forerunner comes with 2 instead of 1 battery straps. This is to add additional hold to the battery to avoid having it come off mid flight or on crash.

A battery pack coming lose can potentially damage the ESC because they are connected by cable.

Preparing Flight

Cycle

To start

  • charging the batteries
  • attaching the battery with straps
  • mounting the propellers
  • turning on the goggles, remote waiting for them to link
  • checking the settings in the goggles
  • plugging together the battery and drone power cable
  • waiting for the GPS to lock in at least 5 satellites
  • arming the drone
  • takeoff

To end

  • landing
  • unplugging the battery
  • turn off goggles and remote
  • unscrew propellers
  • dry and clean the drone if wet or dirty
  • bring the batteries to “storage” voltage with your charging device
Installing the battery

The battery has 2 cables coming out of it. The broad semi-transparent one is for charging purposes while the smaller headed one with a black and red cable is the main power line.

The drone has a pretty similar cable coming out of it, they fit in each other. Plugging them together activates the drone.

Be mindful of not letting the drone sit around activated for a long period of time to avoid overheating.

Disconnecting the power cable at any moment will not damage the drone. This can and should be done when in doubt.

Propeller Mounting

Each motor has a fixed rotation direction.

Each propeller has a fixed rotation orientation. Flipping the propeller head over will not suffice. The included propellers indicate the direction.

The Forerunner has its 2 front motors rotation inward, meaning that the fron left motor rotates clockwise when watched from above the drone and the front right motor spins counter-clockwise.

The back motors rotate outward meaning the back-left motor spins counter-clockwise and the back-right motor clockwise.

Make sure the propeller direction aligns with the motor direction or the drone will violently flip at start.

Flying

Controls / Mapping

If you are using the DJI Remote Controller 3, you can use our default mapping:

  • example = action

Else please map the drone according to your liking and your hardware in the “inav-configurator”.

Failsafe

If there is any problem like losing the connection to the pilot, the forerunner will go into failsafe mode and stop on the stop, increase altitude to a certain level and return directly to the take-off position for landing.

If the problem is resolved before returning, you can move the sticks to abort the failsafe mode.
